About Kyo-Wazarashi Mensha

Kyo-Wazarashi Mensha is the gauze brand of Daito Shingu Kogyo, a bedding maker in Kyoto founded in 1925. After decades of making bedding, the company set out to create the gentlest possible cloth for the skin, and arrived at cotton gauze finished with wazarashi, a traditional Japanese bleaching method.

Traditional wazarashi bleaching of Kyo-Wazarashi cotton gauze

Four days of slow wazarashi bleaching

The woven cotton is cooked slowly in special kettles for four days, without stressing the fibers. Because the fibers are never forced, each one keeps its round shape and traps air. The gauze absorbs water the moment it touches it, dries remarkably fast and stays clean and fresh. It is finished without chemical additives and contains zero formaldehyde, so it is safe even for a newborn’s skin and for sensitive skin.

Layers joined only at the edges

Most multi-layer gauze is woven with the layers tacked together at many points. Kyo-Wazarashi weaves each layer as a separate sheet and joins them only at the edges when sewing. With nothing holding the layers together in the middle, more air stays between them, giving an airy, cloud-like softness and even faster drying. Sewing five separate layers this way takes real skill. The gauze grows softer and fluffier with every wash.
