The Magic of Magewappa: Elevate Any Meal
There is something genuinely special about opening a Magewappa box. Thanks to the smooth, natural curves of the oval shape and the warm tone of genuine Akita Cedar, even the simplest home-cooked dish, leftovers, or light snacks look instantly appetizing and beautifully presented. It transforms your daily lunch break into a relaxing, satisfying moment to look forward to.
A Heritage Born in Akita: Craftsmanship by Odate Kougeisha
Originating in the historic region of Odate, Akita, Magewappa was first created centuries ago when local foresters utilized the finest wild Akita Cedar to craft durable, lightweight daily vessels. Today, this tradition is carried on by Odate Kougeisha, one of Japan’s most revered workshops dedicated to preserving this Designated National Traditional Craft.
- Centuries-Old Timber: Made from high-grade Akita Cedar, known for its remarkably fine grain, strength, and delicate natural aroma.
- Masterful Hand Technique: Each piece is created by Odate Kougeisha’s skilled craftsmen who steam, hand-bend, and meticulously shape every wooden strip with precision that cannot be replicated by machines.
Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Everyday Convenience
While traditional bare wood requires delicate handling, this piece features a food-safe clear coating specially applied by Odate Kougeisha. This protective finish offers the best of both worlds:
- Hassle-Free Care: Wash it effortlessly with ordinary dish soap and a soft sponge, just like your everyday tableware.
- No Oil Stains: Feel free to pack fried items, dressed salads, or richer foods without worrying about grease soaking into the wood.
- Durable & Long-Lasting: Built to withstand daily use while preserving the fine grain, gentle texture, and subtle cedar aroma.
Whether used as a classic Japanese bento box, an elegant container for serving pastries and bread, or a warm storage box for your favorite home accessories, it brings a touch of authentic Japanese mindfulness to your modern lifestyle.
What Makes Odate Kougeisha Magewappa Special
- Rice and side dishes stay delicious even when cold: Magewappa has countless invisible micro-pores in the wood. They absorb excess steam and release moisture when the contents begin to dry out. This natural humidity-regulating property of cedar is why rice and side dishes stay fluffy and tender instead of turning hard as they cool.
- The lightness and aroma of Akita Cedar: Pick up a Magewappa and you will be surprised at how light it is. The gentle scent of cedar also has a relaxing effect on body and mind.
- Cedar’s natural antibacterial properties: Cedar is said to have a strong antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, one of the common causes of food poisoning.
- Easy to care for: To make it practical as an everyday lunch box, the piece is finished with a protective coating. Even oily dishes can be packed, and it washes easily with ordinary household dish soap. The coating also improves durability so it can be enjoyed for many years.
- Cedar over 100 years old: Akita’s distinctive climate, with hot summers, cold winters, and short daylight hours, makes the cedar grow slowly with fine, tight annual rings. This is what forms the beautiful straight grain (masame) that characterizes Odate Kougeisha’s Magewappa.
- Handmade by artisans carrying on the tradition: Craftsmen who hold advanced skills, techniques, and experience in producing traditional crafts are certified by the government as “Traditional Craftsmen” (Dento Kogeishi). Odate Kougeisha has five certified Traditional Craftsmen on its team.

Care & Maintenance
Because this piece is coated, it can be washed with dish soap just like everyday tableware. Simply apply detergent to a soft sponge and wash gently.
- Dish soap is fine, and oily stains come off easily: After use, remove any food residue with household dish detergent and a soft sponge, without scrubbing hard.
- Avoid abrasives: Do not use hard sponges, scouring pads, or abrasive cleansers, as they can damage the coating and the wood.
- Stand it up to dry thoroughly: After washing, wipe off the water well with a soft cloth, then stand the box upright and let it dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area before putting it away.
- Please note: Not safe for microwave, oven, dishwasher, or long soaking in water.
