About Osaka Suzuki
Osaka Suzuki (大阪錫器) was founded in Osaka in 1949 and today produces nearly all of Osaka Naniwa Suzuki (Osaka tinware), a designated Traditional Craft of Japan with more than 300 years of history. Its craftspeople, including nationally certified traditional craftsmen, cast, turn and finish every piece by hand.
1. Three reasons tin suits sake
- High heat conductivity: tin passes on cold and warmth quickly and holds the temperature well.
- Mellowing effect: tin is said to make sake rounder and smoother.
- Purifying effect: it lets the flavor of the sake come through.
Taste is personal, but many people who drink from a tin guinomi (sake cup) find that sake tastes better than usual. Each cup is made by hand and sits comfortably in the palm.
2. Two textures, six colors
- Shofu (松風, "wind in the pines"): a vertical, bark-like texture.
- Sazare (さざれ, "pebbles"): a fine, granular texture.
Both come in black, red, silver, blue, green and yellow. The inside is polished to a bright tin finish.
Ready to give
Every piece comes in a paulownia wood (kiri) box, the traditional Japanese gift box. Handmade by traditional craftspeople and presented in wood, Osaka Suzuki tinware is a long-time favorite for birthdays, retirements, weddings and the 10th wedding anniversary (the "tin anniversary").
